Different types of closures are available depending on the body type and core shapes of bras. A designer or even a merchant should have good ideas on those facts to choose the right one. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular types of bra closures that are available on the market today:

H&E (Hook and Eye) Closures:

This type of closure is most often seen on standard bras which has two parts. The hooks which go around the skin on the back. And the eyes which attach to the front of the hooks. The H&E closures are basically made from metal or plastic, and come in various sizes matching different sizes and shapes of bodies. H&E closures are great for providing an adjustable fit that’s secure and supportive. This bra closure is easy to fasten and unfasten and makes for a comfortable wearing experience.

Most common size is either 28mm (standard in the UK) or 30mm tall (standard in the US) and has 2 hooks and 3 sets of eyes for adjuster. This size is perfect for bra core sizing (30B-36D). Next size up would be 3 hooks and 3 sets of eyes. This size is most common for curvy size and plus size, and for strapless and convertible bras. Since all support comes from the band because there are no straps to help with the support. Finally, there are 1 hook Hook & Eyes which are mostly used for small sizes or bralettes, as they provide the least support. Additionally, any size H&E can have 4 sets of eyes instead of 3 for extra adjustment. These are used for often by brands who want to provide their customers with extra adjustability and for maternity bras, since breast size fluctuates during breastfeeding.

G-Hook Closures:

A G-Hook closure is great for those who are looking for a more relaxed fit. This type of closure has a swan hook that attaches around a loop to hook the bottom band in place. When choosing this type of closure is mostly a design choice rather than function as it is less forgiving than a hook and eye closure. It can be a nice design detail as it is hardware and oftentimes can be branded. The disadvantage for this type is that it can be used mostly in smaller size bras and provide less adjustability.

Bow Closures:

Bow closures are often used in swimwear of halter. A bow is tied from two straps of fabric either around the back or around the neck (or both). It’s a simple and elegant design choice that adds a touch of femininity to any lingerie or swimwear piece. It gives the wearer an air of confidence and style. The advantage is that the wearer can tie it as hard or as relaxed as they need, but it does not provide much support. It is mostly used in swimwear tops and bottoms usually as a decorative element.

Furthermore there are a few other closures used for bras and intimate apparel that may be less common. Velcro closures are often seen on sports bras as an easy and adjustable option. An underwire frame closure is used in bras that have a molded cup, allowing the user to open and close the bra with ease. Underwire frame closures are also popular in strapless and bustier bras. Button and loop closures are another type of closure used in bras, usually found in the back to add support. Lastly, wire-free bras are available with no closure at all, relying solely on the elasticity of the fabric and adjustable straps to hold it in place.

It’s no surprise that bras are an essential part of any woman’s intimate apparel wardrobe. Not only do they provide support and shape, but the right style and fit can make her feel more confident and beautiful. Choosing the right type of bras closures can make all the difference. So ultimately, when designing an intimate apparel item like a bra, take your time, do research, and never overlook choosing the best bra closure!
