COMFORT FOR ALL LENGTHS
The Overlooked Factor in Intimate Apparel Fit: Why Body Length Matters
When it comes to intimate apparel, getting the right fit is crucial. It can make all the difference in terms of comfort, support, and confidence. However, many brands only consider body shapes but fail to consider the importance of body length when creating lingerie and shapewear. This can lead to issues such as a poor fit, discomfort, and unflattering silhouettes.
In this article, we will examine why body length matters in intimate apparel, uncover commonly overlooked factors in lingerie fit, and discuss how start-ups and entrepreneurs in the industry can use this knowledge to create garments that cater to a diverse range of body lengths.
UNDERSTANDING BODY LENGTH AND FIT ISSUES
Body length is the measurement from the top of the head to the feet. It varies significantly from person to person and is often overlooked in standard clothing sizing. Without taking body length into consideration, garments can be too short or too long, resulting in the following fit issues:
- Pulling in just above the waist
- Cups sitting too low
- Dresses being too short
- Bodysuits being uncomfortable
- As shown in the images below, a garment that is too short can create an unflattering silhouette and cause lumps and bumps on the figure.
RESEARCH INTO BODY LENGTH
To better understand the impact of body length on intimate apparel fit, we conducted research on a diverse range of women’s body lengths. We collected measurements such as all-round body, neck to crotch front and back, neck to waist, and shoulder to POB. After analyzing our findings, we discovered that most women’s body lengths differ from the neck to the waist. This means that body length mainly differs above the navel and below the breast.
Based on the research findings, we organized the average body length data for different height categories, namely petite, average, and tall, into a structured presentation. We found that there was a 4 cm difference in front body length, a 3 cm difference in neck to waist, and a 1 cm difference in shoulder to POB between each category.
CREATING ADJUSTABLE GARMENTS
With the insights gained from our research, we identified the potential to create adjustable garments for varying body lengths. Our vision is to design a customizable dress that can cater to women of different heights, utilising the following approaches:
- Strap Adjustment Length: We recommend a 6 cm overall strap adjustment length, considering the 1 cm difference in neck to waist measurement between body length categories, to provide a better fit for women with longer torsos.
- Circular Ring System: We propose incorporating a circular ring system under the bust, with three layers placed 3 cm apart to accommodate different body lengths – petite, standard, and tall.
- Customization Options: To ensure a perfect fit, we will provide customization options such as adjustable straps, multiple layers of fabric, and other innovative solutions tailored to individual body lengths.
Women often struggle with finding the right fit due to their varying body lengths, leading to pure discomfort and dissatisfaction with their undergarments. By providing comfortable and flattering fits, your brand can differentiate itself and capture a loyal customer base. Ultimately, embracing diversity and empowering women to feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin is the key to building a successful intimate apparel business. With this in mind, we wish you the best of luck on your journey!
