FIT MATTERS!
Tolerances in Intimate Apparel
Tolerances in intimate apparel refer to the acceptable range of variations or deviations from the specified measurements or dimensions in the design and development of garments such as lingerie, underwear, and other items worn close to the body. In other words, it defines the margin of error that is considered acceptable during the production process.
In the intimate apparel industry, where garments are worn close to the body, precise fit and comfort are of utmost importance. Tolerances help address the inherent challenges of producing garments that cater to diverse body shapes and sizes while maintaining consistency and quality. Here are a few key aspects to understand about tolerances in intimate apparel:
Fit Precision:
Intimate apparel garments, such as bras, briefs, and lingerie, are designed to fit closely to the body. Even minor variations in measurements can impact the fit and overall comfort. Tolerances define the acceptable range within which these variations can occur without compromising the desired fit. For example, a difference of a few millimeters in cup measurements can change the bra size from a B cup to a C cup. This sensitivity underscores the need for precise measurements and attention to detail.
Measurement Variations:
During the production process, variations can arise due to factors such as fabric characteristics, sewing techniques, and human error. Tolerances allow for slight deviations in measurements, accommodating these variations without affecting the overall quality and fit of the garment.
Addressing Asymmetry in Lingerie:
While lingerie products like bras and briefs are often symmetrical in design, it’s noted that the cups in the finished garment may not measure exactly the same. Therefore, it’s important to consider and account for this variability when creating size charts and patterns. To address the issue of asymmetry and variations in measurements, the Product Data Management (PDM) team or pattern cutter may apply a working tolerance to the size charts. This working tolerance can help accommodate minor discrepancies and ensure consistency in sizing and fit across production.
Sizing Consistency:
Brands often have specific size ranges and grading rules to cater to a wide customer base. Tolerances also help maintain sizing consistency across different styles and sizes within a brand’s product line. By adhering to established tolerances, manufacturers can ensure that garments within the same size range have a consistent fit and offer customers a reliable sizing experience.
Quality Control:
Tolerances are an essential part of quality control in the intimate apparel manufacturing process. Garments are inspected against the specified tolerances during quality control checks to ensure they meet the required standards. By conducting these inspections, manufacturers can identify any deviations that may affect fit, comfort, or overall product quality and take corrective measures.
Customer Satisfaction:
Intimate apparel is a highly personal and intimate product category. Customers have high expectations for fit, comfort, and quality. By maintaining tight tolerances and delivering garments that align with customer expectations, brands can enhance customer satisfaction, loyalty, and repeat business.
It’s important to note that specific tolerances may vary depending on the brand’s requirements, garment type, and target market. Brands typically establish their own tolerance guidelines based on factors such as fabric properties, style requirements, and customer preferences. These guidelines are communicated to manufacturers through technical specifications; commonly referred to as tech packs, or sample garments. Undeniably all these things help to ensure that all parties involved in production can work towards achieving the desired standards.
